Bio / Background
Never have a hip-hop drum beat, a cello, circuit-bent instruments and a soulful voice been so artfully combined than in the music of innovative electronica musician, Alex Romero.
Born in Miami to immigrant Cuban parents, Romero grew up in poverty with little opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a performer. As a result, he largely ignored what his public school music teachers dubbed a “natural talent for singing and songwriting” and focused on academic studies, which he felt were more likely to lead him to a better life.
It wasn’t until he enrolled at Yale University that he began to develop his unique experimental music, tinkering with unlikely sources of sound such as prepared guitars, circuit-bent electronic instruments and mashed samples. Romero performed in New Haven coffee shops and at various collegiate “art nights,” in front of receptive audiences of friends, dorm mates and professors.
↓ more ↓After graduating with a BA in Evolutionary Biology, Romero moved to New York City to record his ambitious debut album "Melodrama," a quirky and catchy compilation which is currently taking the underground music scene by storm.
