The hottest thing to happen to Boogie Blues in 30 years. - REAL BLUES Magazine
Bio / Background
REAL BLUES Magazine (Canada)
"I feel a little silly that I didn’t know about Alex Gomez prior to receiving this disc, but now I certainly know who he is. It’s like one of those wake up punches that really grabs your attention. Gomez hosted the PBS series “Blue Slide Guitar Workshop” and then went on to grab everyone’s attention at Bluestock (Memphis 2000) where the French Bluetone label spotted him and signed him. His CD for them, “Slidin’ Down the Delta”, got lots of great press and this is his follow-up release. What’s really interesting is that the disc was recorded at the legendary Sugarhill Studios in Houston (Lightnin’ Hopkins and Janis Joplin) and I don’t know if that heritage contributed some of the excess of Boogie testosterone, but whatever the contributing factors were - this CD is killer-diller, mad dog, Boogie Blues at its rabid finest.
↓ more ↓This guy has got a formula that can’t miss - singin’ about what is really important - poontang, getting’ loaded and crazy broads all set to dirty, wild slide. Picture Hound Dog Taylor with Black Flag circa 1982. Not for old fart Blues connoisseurs or pansies, Gomez’s boogie-til-you-puke sound is just what the Doctor (Boogie) ordered in this age of poseurs and politically correct wusses. Alex delivers a modern day Link Wray “Rumble” attitude and I dig it. Boogie (and rock) ain’t supposed to be pretty, boring or polite. Heck, I even started throwin’ bottles against the wall whilst I engaged in a frenzy of frug and Philly Dog. Hey! It’s a gol’ darn riot of good time Boogie and Gomez’s distorted, nasty slide playing gets extra bonus points for the use of a socket wrench (no kiddin’) slide. North American music needs to be kicked in the ass and beaten over the head and Alex Gomez is the man for the job. “Macon Bacon” opens with a crash/bang and serves nasty notice with a Bo Diddley (on steroids) rhythm. Just vocals, wild slide up front, minimal primal percussion and a Boogie bass pattern (Gomez?) keep things no frills and focused. “New Orleans” is nasty white trash with attitude while “Woman Trouble” is about crazy-makin’, obsessive lust. My favorite Boogie stomper is “Southern Belle” with lyrics that’ll go over well at a Hell’s Angels picnic. Gomez is the hottest thing to happen to Boogie Blues (he kicks Thorogood’s butt) in 30 years and once he hits the airwaves (along with Robin Sylar and Tony Vega) we should have a much needed Boogie Blues-filled music revolution. Every tune is a smokin’ hot killer-diller. 6 empty tequila bottles for a CD that spews guitar anarchy mayhem. Yahoo!"

high energy. good sound. alex has a unique voice that really goes with this style of blues. i liked 7 out the 10 tracks. the others are kind of repetitive. all in all i'd give the whole album 7 out 10.
