A beautiful and lyrical album from this Loud Family keyboardist. Her second solo cd, produced by the prodigious Chris Xefos, features Alison on piano and vocals plus one special guest musician on each song.
Editorial review
The Fog Show is primarily a vehicle for Alison Faith Levy's powerful vocals and piano work; as per the rules of the album, only one other instrument is allowed to join in on each track, resulting in an uniformly moody and spare ambience. While steeped in pop structures, the minimalist performances occasionally suggest the blues and even the torch ballad tradition, matching well with the melancholy and contemplative nature of Levy's songs -- tracks like "Slow Fade" and "Sunday Night Lonesome" are thoroughly evocative of their titles. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
"Over the past several years, San Francisco singer/songwriter Alison Faith Levy has had her hand in several disparate musical projects. From fronting her own piano-based outfit, to playing in the Loud Family, to film score commissions, her work runs the musical gamut."
San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Alison Faith Levy first attracted attention with her 1994 EP Grumbelina; its follow-up, the 1995 single "The Scientist," caught the ear of Loud Family frontman Scott Miller, who soon invited her to join his band.
She released here first solo album, "The Fog Show" in 1998, followed by "My World View" in 2000.
A sparse moody album, The Fog Show is part rainy day pop, part torch, and part blues, fueled by truly inspired arrangements and Levy's impassioned vocals and piano playing. The Fog Show is a stripped down affair, consisting of only piano, vocals, and one additional instrument per song.
↓ more ↓Produced by Chris Xefos (King Missile, Moth Wranglers), the songs on The Fog Show weave in and out of each other in a languid, melancholy, emotionally charged melodic trip. Take one part Red House Painters, one part Dusty Springfield, with a little dash of Carole King and Brian Wilson thrown in for good measure. Perfect for a cold night, a hot bath, and a bottomless glass of whiskey.
Alison Faith Levy is a keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter for the wildly successful psychedelic rock band for kids, The Sippy Cups. She recorded two albums and toured as the keyboardist in The Loud Family, performed in The Minstrel in the Galleries with John Wesley Harding, sings blues, jazz & country standards with acoustic guitar legend Dale Miller, and is the vocalist for avant-improv group Mushroom.
