Bio / Background
The 29 Mules have an equivocal sound that is old timey and familiar, yet like nothing you’ve ever heard before. It’s a rocking, rowdy, bluesy, soul-filled country sound that can’t be pigeonholed into any record-store category. Their live shows are high-energy jams that pack the dance floor with swinging & stomping.
Casey Cannon and Xavier Gonzalez met while working at Guitar Center in L.A. They instantly connected when they discovered they were both Air Force brats with roots in Texas & the wilds of the Mojave Desert. After a few years of writing and performing together in a southern rock band, they noticed their music was drifting towards the outlaw country traditions they grew up with like Waylon, Willie, Merle, Hank & Johnny. Seasoned with the enigmatic rhymes of harp player Dave Spangler and the funky riffs of bassist Josh Jones, the boys cooked up a swampy, whiskey & weed fueled new sound in backyard jams.
↓ more ↓With the addition of legendary drummer David Raven, 29 Mules was born, kicking & screaming, into the L.A. country scene.
Fusing that ironic dichotomy of country & rock, the Mules have played the Sunset Strip’s Key Club with Robert Earl Keen & Hank Williams, III. They’ve created honky tonks in L.A., jamming with Lucinda Williams, Bruce Robison & Michelle Shocked at Molly Malone’s, and brought country back to the valley with their popular Wednesday night hootenannies at Ireland’s 32. Continuing in the tradition of Jakob Dylan’s Wallflowers, the Mules have taken over Tuesday night resident jams at the renowned Canter’s Kibitz Room, and earned a spot on the Sin City Social Club sampler CD alongside Kris Kristofferson, Jessi Colter, Linda Rondstat, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash & the Little Willies. 29 Mules can be heard on college & indie radio, including live performances on Cowboy Nick’s Toe Tappin’ Music on KXLU 88.9FM, KCSN 88.5FM and Indie 103.1’s Watusi Radio in Los Angeles. With their versatile sound, the boys are at home in the rowdiest of honky tonks, or black tie affairs like the American Women in Radio & TV’s 2006 Genii Awards sponsored by KZLA.
29 Mules shows have become the place see all kinds of special guest artists including regulars Dwight Yoakum’s drummer Mitch Marine, Hank III’s fiddle player Mike Starr, Chris Lawrence on pedal steel, and blues guitar master Roby Duron (or you might even see Marc Ford of the Black Crowes!) The Mules deliver whiskey drinkin', chicken spittin', soul spewin', roots rockin' outlaw honky tonk every time. THIS AIN'T YO' MAMMA'S DONKEY SHOW!
